Paying for college without the panic: a financial literacy primer

The College Wonder Team

College might be the biggest purchase your family makes before a house, and it usually comes with the least clear pricing. The good news: a handful of concepts do most of the heavy lifting. Learn these and the whole thing gets a lot less scary.

Sticker price is not the price

The published cost is a starting point, not a bill. What matters is net price: sticker minus the grants and scholarships you don't repay. A private school with a scary sticker can end up cheaper than your state flagship once aid is in the picture. Always compare net price, never the brochure number.

Money you keep vs. money you repay

Financial aid comes in two flavors, and the difference is everything:

  • Gift aid: grants and scholarships. Free money you never pay back. Maximize this first.
  • Self-help aid: loans and work-study. Loans get repaid with interest; work-study you earn by working.
  • Federal loans generally beat private ones: lower fixed rates, income-driven repayment, and more protections.

The forms that unlock it

File the FAFSA. It's the key to federal grants, loans, and work-study, and most states and schools use it too. Some colleges also want the CSS Profile for their own aid. File early: a lot of aid is first-come, first-served, so the calendar can matter as much as the paperwork.

How to read an aid letter

Award letters love to blur the line between free money and loans. Before you celebrate a big number, separate the grants from the loans, subtract only the gift aid from the cost of attendance, and look at what's left. That leftover, plus any loans, is what the year actually costs you.

How much debt is reasonable?

A common rule of thumb: try not to borrow more in total than you expect to earn in your first year out of school. It keeps monthly payments manageable and the degree worth the cost. If a school pushes you well past that, treat it as a signal: not necessarily a no, but a real conversation.

Borrow for the degree you can repay, not the name you can brag about.

College Wonder builds real net price into every match, so affordability isn't a surprise you discover in April. It's part of your list from day one. Build your profile and see what each school would actually cost your family.
