Building a balanced list: reach, match, and safety

A good college list isn't a wish list ranked by prestige. It's a balanced set of schools that gives you real choices in the spring, both in where you're admitted and in what you'll actually pay.
The three buckets
Sort every school on your list into one of three groups, based on your odds of getting in:
- Reach: your stats sit below or right at the edge of the school's admitted range, or the school is long odds for nearly everyone. Worth dreaming on, never worth counting on.
- Match: your profile lands squarely in the middle of the school's admitted range. Likely, but never a guarantee.
- Safety: your stats are comfortably above the range and admission is very likely. This is your floor, so make it a floor you'd be happy to stand on.
How many of each
A common shape is two or three reaches, three or four matches, and two safeties. The exact count matters less than the balance. A list that's all reaches is a gamble. A list that's all safeties sells you short. Aim for a spread that leaves you with several good options no matter how the decisions land.
The mistake almost everyone makes
They treat safeties as throwaways. But a safety you'd resent attending isn't a safety at all, it's a problem you're postponing until April. Every school on your list, especially the safe ones, should be somewhere you can genuinely picture yourself and genuinely afford.
Balance your aid, not just your odds
Admissions odds are only half of a good list. The other half is money. Make sure some of your schools are likely to be affordable for your family, not just likely to admit you. A financial safety, a school you will almost certainly get into and can comfortably pay for, might be the most important line on the whole list.
- Include at least one in-state public where you'd be admitted and could afford to enroll.
- Add schools known to be generous with need-based or merit aid for a profile like yours.
- Run the real net price everywhere before you let yourself fall in love.
